Matcha tea powder is from shade grown tea plants, which are dried and grinned into a fine powder. Original Matcha tea powder is produced in the Uji region of Japan where the conditions for growing the tea plants are the best. This powder has a bright green colour which can slightly vary depending on the quality of the tea and the tea plant. You can prepare two types of tea using Matcha tea powder – usucha and koicha.

Matcha tea powder – tea types
Usucha, or thin tea, uses approximately 1.75 grams (or half a teaspoon) of matcha powder and approximately 75ml of hot water per serving. Usucha is lighter and slightly more bitter tea.
Koicha is known as thick tea and uses more Matcha tea powder, usually double the amount of powder and half the amount of water. This creates a thicker mixture which needs to be slowly blended in a stirring motion which does not normally produce foam. Koicha is usually made with more expensive Matcha powder from mature tea plants and has a sweater taste.
